Keeping San Diego Beautiful

The city of San Diego is known for its abundance of trees and other fauna. Its streets are lined with tropical palm trees that give them a magical appearance, but they require a lot of maintenance. Their natural beauty hides many hidden dangers and the local council works tirelessly to ensure that the cities residents and visitors are protected.

The Urban Forestry Section of the city office is responsible for tree trimming in all of the public areas of San Diego, including streets, parks, and other places where people congregate.

If you notice a tree causing a hazard you can simply call the Urban Forestry office and request a no-fee, tree trimming permit. A city inspector will then come along and inspect the tree and confirm it is actually causing a hazard. Once the official is satisfied that the tree is indeed causing a hazard he will schedule an appointment for the cities maintenance team to come and trim the offending tree.

There are, however, specific criteria that must be met before the San Diego city official will sanction the trimming or removal of a tree.

1. To eliminate immediate hazards

The city official must be satisfied that the tree presents an immediate danger to the public and has the potential to cause harm

2. Provide visibility for motorists and pedestrians

If the tree is obstructing the view of either motorists or pedestrians then it is much more likely that the officer will sanction the trees pruning or removal. If a motorist can not see the roads ahead clearly then it is very likely that an accident will occur and so trimming is ordered to prevent injury.

Likewise, if a pedestrian’s view is hindered then it is a very real possibility that they will not be able to see oncoming traffic and may step it in front of a moving vehicle. It is for this reason that the inspector will order the tree either trimmed or removed.

3. Clearing the public right-of-way

Pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, and construction work must not be hindered by low hanging branches or other such obstructions. These may cause injury or accident so are immediately dealt with.

4. Palm trimming

Since palm trees are so prevalent in San Diego it is of the utmost importance that they are regularly maintained and attend to. These types of trees present unique issues and require a professional tree trimming service. The city will provide such a service for public streets and highways but they do not cover domestic or privately owned trees. It is the duty of the resident or business owner to find a suitable company to remove or trim the offending palm tree.

5. Tree removal

Only dead trees or those deemed to be an immediate threat or hazard to either public or motorists will be removed without delay. All other cases of tree removal will be adjudicated by the city official with a view to preserve or removal. The city has a mandate to preserve the natural beauty and historical importance of its trees and is, therefore, reluctant to remove trees. Removal is only considered after all other options have been thoroughly exhausted.

If you know of a tree that meets the above criteria you can call the Urban Forestry Section of the San Diego city council for an evaluation. Simply call (619) 236-5513 to schedule an appointment and a city official will be on the scene to inspect the offending tree.

Let’s work together to keep San Diego beautiful!

Planning a Vacation to San Diego – What to Watch Out For

So, you’re planning a vacation to San Diego, and you’re beginning to prepare for the big trip.

Congratulations! You’re going to love it here!

Love San Diego

San Diego has much more to do than you think, and it’s a city which slowly reveals itself to you the longer you stay. That said, there are some things you should look out for in any city far from home. While San Diego is wonderful, it’s not perfect, so keep these things in mind so as not to ruin the trip of a lifetime. These top tips from those working in the San Diego tourism industry will help you avert any avoidable problems.

First, you might be from outside the USA, so keep in mind that we drive on the OTHER side of the road from most European countries. There have been several accidents in the past few years due to visitors driving on the wrong side, leading to injuries and damage which could have been prevented.

Second, San Diego does have pickpockets and gangs of petty thieves operating in and around tourist areas. Sea World and San Diego Zoo are two of the areas most prone to petty crimes like pickpocketing. Be sure to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Always keep an eye on your belongings.

Third, San Diego is a coastal city with some of the most beautiful beaches and best waves off the coast. It’s tempting to go in for a dip or catch some waves, but you should always respect the power of the ocean and be aware of rip tides which can drag you out to sea. Always do your research on the ocean in the area you plan to swim in to see if there are any hazards you need to be aware of.

Fourth, bring your sunscreen! San Diego is hot, hot, hot at certain times of the year and if you’re visiting from colder climates, you may get burned and have to spend some of your vacation time cooped up with Aloe Vera slathered all over your body.

Fifth, San Diego is a big city by anybody’s standards. At 964 square km, it would be easy to get lost. A quick tip: always place a card for your hotel in your wallet as soon as you arrive. That way, if you do get lost, just hail a cab and give the driver the card.

Speaking of cabs, sixth, you should only use trusted operators. There are some scam taxis operating in San Diego hoping to take advantage of tourists. Have your hotel call you a cab and don’t accept unsolicited offers. Alternatively, use Uber
or another ride sharing app.

Keeping these things in mind will help you avoid negative experiences and have the best vacation possible in our wonderful, welcoming city. You’ll have a ball here, with the incredible Balboa Park, Seaport Village and so many other attractions waiting to greet you.

Enjoy your stay in San Diego. We’re glad to have you!
